I SHALL NOT LIVE IN VAIN

If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain,
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again.
I shall not live in vain.

EMILY DICKINSON

CONTRASTS

For every sunset, there's a sunrise,
For every winter comes a spring,
For every word spoken in anger,
There's joy and gladness kind words can bring.

For every raindrop there's a sunbeam.
For every tear a lovely smile,
For every storm a promise given-
This too shall pass in awhile.

Life's made of contrasts, sweet and bitter,
Into each life both must fall,
But, be it trial or blessing,
We know God's hand is in it all.

If life were always bright and happy,
Would we then seek help from above,
Or know the joy when breaks the morning,
With rainbowed skies of hope and love.

BEVERLY J. ANDERSON

THERE'S NO RAINBOW

There's no rainbow without the rain
No baby born without some pain,
No summertime without the spring,
No song at all unless we sing.

No twinkling stars without the night,
No morning dew without the light,
No sheltered nooks without the bowers,
No fragrance sweet without the flowers.

No honeycombs without the bees,
No shady lawns without the trees,
No love at all unless we give,
Pour out our love each day we live.

EACH DAY YOU LIVE

Each day you live be grateful
you are alive another day.
Take time to gather the flowers
in abundance to give away.
Give the flowers to the living
we were taught long ago.
Speak while they can hear you.
If you love them tell them so,
Seek no man out to slander
or ridicule his name.
We all belong to Jesus and
He loves each one the same.
Do what you can for others,
hear their distressful cry.
God sees how we treat others,
He knows when we pass them by,
Never leave kind words unspoken,
greet each one with a smile,
Each day will grow brighter
each day more worthwhile.

THE PRICELESS GIFT OF FRIENDSHIP

Friendship is a priceless gift that cannot be bought or sold.
But it's value is far greater than any mountain made of gold.
For gold is cold and lifeless, it can neither see nor hear.
And in our times of troubles it is powerless to cheer.
It has no ears to listen, nor a heart to understand.
It cannot bring you comfort or reach out a helping hand.
So when you ask God for a gift, be thankful He sends,
Not diamonds, pearls or riches, but the love of real true friends,

WHEN YOU THOUGHT I WASN'T LOOKING
When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you hang my first
picture on the refrigerator and I wanted to paint another one.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you feed a stray cat
and I thought it was good to be kind to animals.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you make my favorite cake
and I knew that little things are special things.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I heard you say a prayer
and I believed there is a God I could always talk to.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I felt you kiss me goodnight
and I felt loved.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw tears come from your eyes
and I learned that some things hurt, but it's all right to cry.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw that you cared
and I wanted to be everything I could be,
When you thought I wasn't looking, I looked and wanted to say thanks
for all the things I saw when you thought I wasn't looking.

To laugh is to risk being as a fool.
To weep is to risk being sentimental.
To reach out to another is to risk involvement.
To expose your feelings is to risk exposing your
true self. To place your ideas and dreams before a
crowd is to risk their loss. To love is to risk not being
loved in return. To live is to risk dying.
To hope is to risk despair.
To try is to risk failure.
But the risks must be taken because the
greatest hazzard in life is to risk nothing.
The person who risks nothing, has nothing.
She/he may avoid suffering and sorrow cannot learn,
feel, change, grow or live. Chained by
her/his servitude she/he is a slave who has forfeited
all freeedom. Only a person who risks is free.
The pessimist complains about the wind expects it
to change and the realist adjusts the sails.

COMES THE DAWN

After awhile you learn the subtle difference
Between holding a hand and chaining a soul
And you learn love doesn't mean leaning
And company doesn't mean security
And you begin to learn that kisses aren't contracts
And presents aren't promises
And you begin to accept your defeats
With your head up and your eyes open
With the grace of a woman not the grief of a child
And you learn to build all your roads on today
Because tomorrow's ground is too uncertain for plans
And futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight
After awhile you learn
That even sunshine burns if you get too much
So plant your own garden and decorate your own soul
Instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers
And learn yoiu really can endure
That you are really strong
And you really do have worth
And you learn and learn
With every goodbye you learn.

A GRANDMOTHER'S PRAYER

Let me give my grandchild gifts,
Not just toys, but other things-
Like treasured dreams and memories
That give a child both roots and wings.
Let me help with little things,
To teach someone to tie a shoe,
To answer funny questions now
And always know what to do.
Let me show that what is old
A child may find completely new,
And know what once delighted me
Makes my grandchild happy, too.
Let me use this special time,
Feeling blessed by circunstance;
For sometimes being a grandma is
A mother's happy second chance.

THE LOVE CHAPTER
Adapted from 1Corinthians 13

I may speak the tongues of men and angels
I may know just what the future brings
I may have the faith to move a mountain
But without Love I am nothing

I may give all I have to feed the poor
I may give my body to be burned
I may know the secrets of all the world
But without Love, what have I learned

Love
Bears all things
Believes all things
Love
Hopes all things
Endures all things
Love
Is kind
And patient too
Love
Never fails
But rejoices in the truth

Now we know of Faith and Hope and Love
In these three we must abide
But you will learn like a child
The greatest of these three is
Love

PAPPYS's BOY
Someone came to stay
For just a little while
To give us happiness
His love and a little smile
He turns his little head
When I call Pappy's Boy
It is so much to me
He was my pride and joy
I would pick him up
To hold him so close and near
His leaving for a new home
Makes my world so dreary
They took my heart away
The tears that I have shed
I wish that some of them
Were on his pretty head
I can't hear Pappy's Boy
I don't hear his little voice
He was going to a new home
It was not our choice
I found the love for Pappy's Boy
With him I'll always share
He is so sweet and tiny
For him I'll always care
The door has closed
The motor has started
They're leaving out the driveway
Our Pappy's Boy has parted
I can hardly stand it
To see them going down the street
Pappy's Boy, to all of us
Was so dear and sweet
I'll wait till I can see him again
To love him so much more
Our grand, baby boy that we have
To love, worship and adore
So long Pappy's Boy
In memory of my Father,
William D. Austin
Who wrote this after his only grandson moved away.

NEVER RETURNED

For years after Pappy's Boy left
His grandfather would often comment
I wonder if I'll ever see him again
The visits were far and few between
Pappy's Boy has grown to be a young man
But has yet to return
The old man wished to see the boy
Maybe a phone call or two
The old man is now in his final days
Asking for his Pappy's Boy
But he is nowhere to be found
The old man is now gone
And Pappy's Boy is grown
He never returned
To see the man who loved him so.
